A great debut single is the opening line in a conversation you never want to end, and hearing a band or artist get it right on their first try is one of the greatest thrills in music. But singles by new bands that happened to include established artists like Public Image Ltd were fair game, as were bands that had released music under a previous name or in an earlier form, like the Grateful Dead, CCR, and New Order. Frank Ocean’s “Lovecrimes,” an Alternative Interpretation
It was released as the lead single from his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra. Lyrically, the song narrates a tale of a young female dental student who makes a living doing porn and who recreationally uses local anesthetic drugs that she acquires from her place of study. The song explores themes of isolation, loneliness and a lack of feeling caused by numbness. The song received highly positive reviews from music critics and was listed as one of the best songs of the year by publications such as The New York Times , Spin , Ology, Zimbio and Pitchfork. Reviews praised the dark subject matter of the song, and praised Ocean's ability to create narratives and the sonic atmosphere of the track. The cover for Novacane is similar to the Roxy Music album Stranded. The song peaked at number 82 on the Billboard Hot and entered the top 10 on the Heatseekers Songs chart. The song received a music video directed by Australian director Nabil Elderkin released on June The highly stylized video shows a long take of Ocean sitting around in a darkly lit room.
Art By: Jake Franssen. We start at the end of the narrative, with Frank declaring he got what he wanted, but not what he needed. Opening with a swerve in perspective only becomes evident on subsequent listens. The twinkling flourishes and urging synths, produced by Tricky Stewart, belie a serious tone.
